I absolutely agree that you should have some type of outline before writing. Whether it be just some random notes, or an organized outline of each character and the setting. It not only gives you a road map of what you are going to write, but it also organizes your thoughts. Without an outline, I feel you risk the chance of rambling on, and never reaching a conclusion.
As for you putting writing on hold, I will have to respectfully disagree on your approach here. While it's true that your first few pieces of writing can turn out like garbage, you should still push past and try to finish what you started. There are several advantages to this; creating millage, and getting practice is one advantage, but also the satisfaction of finishing something and seeing it till the end.
I'll admit that I've wrote my fair share without an outline. It can be fun to free-write. You could also, potentially use the free-write as a sort of rough draft, or an extremely detailed outline. You can work off of it. It's great that you were able to create something you were proud of with this style of writing, for some people it's feasible.
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that "Outliners", obviously outline their writing, and "Discovery" writers are the ones who pretty much free-write. That said, I would have to say that personally I am a hybrid. I say this because sometimes, I just want to write my stories with no outline at all. While other times I want to create an extensive outline; outlining the settings and characters, and just plan everything out before beginning the initial draft.
No need to apologize for the long post at all! I actually encourage it! While some people may not want to read a wall of text, you are still getting millage as a writer by posting long posts. It also creates a sort of template for the next poster. I love interaction. Interaction is dope. That's the whole mission statement here: community. So write as many long posts as your heart desires, my friend!
